Translating the App

We believe translating the app will be very important as couch surfing is not limited to the English-speaking world.

One volunteer is looking into the technical side of this now, and will hopefully roll out a tool in the next few months. We started off English-only to get started, but have tried to keep the code organized in such a way that we can plug in a translation system easily.

So we will post on the forum when the translation system is up. But if you already have some ideas or feedback on this or want to volunteer for a specific language, please let us know already!

I am a fan of Google translate. It can translate full pages of just text. I suggest to focus on other urgent things first. I an not a native English speaker, fyi.

Well, it’s not like coding and translating are done by the same people anyway.

I’ll be happy to help with the Russian translation when the system is ready :upside_down_face:

Google translate is great and it’s definitely getting better but it doesn’t always translate the text correctly. At least in my language which is very word order sensitive and where literal translation (sometimes) doesn’t feel natural at all. Unless the goal is to have a text that looks like it was written by Yoda  it would still need to be checked by native speakers… and luckily we have those here!

Thanks everyone for volunteering; and anyone else who would like to help with translating to a language they know!

I wanted to give a quick update on the status of this. We are currently working on setting up the technical infrastructure for translations, and will hopefully have the system set up in a few weeks. We’ll then get in touch with those who’ve volunteered here and through other channels and start getting together a team for translations.

Happy to help with German as well. But I expect that there will be more of us Germans than you need. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Unless you decide that the English proficiency in Scandinavia is such that we needn’t bother with translations into e.g. Danish and Norwegian, I volunteer for doing these two, but primarily Norwegian since I require a friend’s proofreading assistance to guarantee impeccable Danish.

A thought for the future: how about implementing an auto-translate function into messages? For example, if someone from France wanted to come over and visit me in the UK, we could chat happily back and forth in app with “translate this chat” toggled. I’d like that.
